day 1 was full!

I did a lot and talked with 12 people or so, often in a mixture of Italian and English. The shoe store employee spoke no English, and I managed to do it all in Italiano! Very proud of that. I even told her a joke that made her laugh.

I spent an hour trying to find an ATM, and Google had zero idea what it was talking about. (Lesson learned. It is American only for certain matters) Extra 3 mile walk I did not need. 7-8 miles today, so good guess on my preparations for fitness. And I did get cash finally.

Home to chat w host Francesco (about Etruscans and Stoics today and Matteo's early love life, as they were neighbors once. Ask Charlotte again, about tennis personalities) and to grab my bag for tennis. Not a terrible walk to Fora Italico. The statue of Mussolini is a bit disturbing. I did NOT take a photo of that. No free water at this tournament, but it costs only 2 € per. Could have been worse. Walked home in dark. Zero concerns about safety. Many young and lovely women alone were doing it too.

It is a shame I won't be able to eat out much. The neighborhood has amazing eateries,  not too expensive, including Keanu Reeves' favorite Italian restaurant.( 2 people have told me this.) A full plate of roasted seafood there is €20. Lasagna €11. In fact, I hardly ate today. A cornetto (croissant 🥐) and a small ham sandwich at the tournament was all I had.

The temp is okay, but it is humid for this desert dweller. Glad I brought the deodorant. ( They have stores here, lol)

Having a great time!

People are SO nice, and they seem to appreciate my speaking Italian....if badly. I will improve. Today I learned what shouting "dai!" means,  and "gabbiano", as I watched sea gulls  circling overhead.

Tomorrow morning early, I will walk along the Tiber (fiume Tevere) and visit a market in a typical piazza. Then tennis 11 - 7.  I swore i wouldn't buy anything, but Nike has a kiosk at the tournament with a Jannik logo product unavailable in the USA so far. I suspect I'll succumb.
